Description:
Whitefish Mountain Resort is a year round nature paradise offering alpine and nordic skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, mountain biking, walk in the treetops and scheduled entertainment.
GENERAL ACCESSIBILITY & RESTROOMS
The Base Lodge is mostly accessible. Parking is immediately in front of the building (see the map) which houses the locker rooms, cafeteria / lunchroom, a full service bar, fireplace lounge, daycare, the Mt Jackson room and restrooms.
There are accessible stalls in the restrooms. The restroom entrance doors are extremely heavy - pushing to get in is much easier than exiting the room
There are pay showers in the main floor restrooms before you enter the locker room. They are large enough for a wheelchair but have no bench or dry area. The locker room on the main floor has standard sized lockers for rent. There are no lockers that will accommodate a monoski, biski or wheelchair.
UPPER VILLAGE & SUMMIT HOUSE RESTROOMS
There are partially accessible restrooms in the accessible parking lot. The ladies room stall is deep but has the changing station in it, and there is not enough room to put a chair beside the commode. The sink has turn knobs and the entry to it is very narrow, approximately 30 inches. You'll have to back up to get out.
The Summit House restroom is immediately inside the front doors on the left and is accessible once you get inside the building. When there is enough snow, it's level. In the summer the stairs are exposed.
PARKING
Base Lodge ACCESSIBLE PARKING is immediately in front of the building. The entire row across from the doors is signed accessible parking. To reach it, pass through the parking lot and show your parking permit to the attendant. They will wave you through.
Upper Village accessible parking is available in front of the shops across from the Bierstube and at the far end of the lot behind Bierstube at the base of Chair 2.
DIRECTIONS: Drive all the way to the Village. At the SECOND STOP SIGN turn right. Then turn IMMEDIATELY into the first parking lot on the left. Disregard any FULL LOT signs, show your accessible parking permit to the parking attendant and go ALL THE WAY through the first parking lot AND the Authorized Vehicles Only lot and then go PAST THE TICKET OFFICE into the accessible parking lot. You will be about 50 feet from Chair 2 and about 200 feet from Chair 1 giving you full mountain access.
STAGING
The most secure and most ACCESSIBLE place to stage from is your vehicle in the Upper Village accessible parking lot. There is a (mostly) accessible restroom in the parking area and you can lock your chair in your vehicle. Tickets are available in the same lot and it's an almost level push to the base of Chair 2 (50 feet) and Chair 1 (200 feet).
Base Lodge staging is from the cafeteria on the 3rd floor. There is no secure locking area for wheelchairs or other equipment and there are no private change areas that are accessible (no secure area means no insurance coverage when it gets stolen) and the lift is uphill from the lodge.
FOOD
The Base Lodge cafeteria is the most accessible with hot cooked-to-order meals and cold food (its quite good), the accessible stalls in the restrooms, lots of seating and great views.
Bierstube - great food and atmosphere but there are no wheelchair accessible toilets AT ALL.
Cafe Kandahar - Chef Andy makes some of the best food in town, however there are no accessible toilets, no handicapped parking and there are stairs into the front door. Call in advance to have a ramp put out for you.
Hellroaring Saloon - Nacho heaven but no access whatsoever. There are stairs inside and out and the bathroom is down a flight of stairs.
Summit House - has a wheelchair for use in the closet and an accessible unisex private toilet right inside the door. Please CALL to verify the condition of the wheelchair and to have it placed where your ski buddies can get to it. If you are planning to eat at the Summit House, they will give you a spot to park your own chair and they'll bring it up for you. Call Guest Services to make those arrangements.
TICKETS and RENTALS
You can get tickets at the Base Lodge on the 2nd floor and at the MOTTS ticket building (call first since it's not always open) in the Upper Village in the Lift Plaza area.
Monoski, Biski and outrigger rentals are available in the rental shop in the Base Lodge on the 2nd floor. There is a Yetti monoski and a Mountain Man biski as well as long and short outriggers Rental rates are an extremely affordable rate of $35 per day (I KNOW way less than you'd think HUH??)
If you are a disabled veteran skiing at WMR, please call me before you buy your tickets.
